Air Force Crane Course Practice Test

When lifting loads with sharp edges, the goal is to prevent damage to the sling and the load by spreading the force away from a small, pointed contact area. Using edge guards or corner protectors shields the sling from direct contact with the sharp edge, while padding cushions the interface and helps distribute pressure more evenly. Choosing the right type of sling and the proper length minimizes edge contact in the first place, ensuring the load is supported over a larger area and the tension is distributed rather than concentrated at a single point.

Padding alone doesn’t shield against cutting or abrasion, and relying on the sling to protect the edge without guards leaves the edge vulnerable. Simply avoiding edge protection isn’t feasible for sharp edges and would risk sling damage and load compromise. Combining edge guards, corner protectors, and padding with an appropriately selected sling type and length provides the necessary protection and load distribution for safe lifting.
